F.I.R.S.T (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology is a partnership with local businesses and high school students to solve a complex problem by creating a robot that is used to compete against other high school teams from around the world. This competition exposes them to mechanical, electrical, and software engineering, as well as sales, marketing, and public speaking.
FIRST is not just about robotics. It’s about changing our culture. It’s about exposing students to the fact that it is more fun to create a video game than it is to play one. The goal is to show that STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) careers can be fun, rewardable, and attainable. The FIRST team at Hopkins High School is teaching its students just this.
The Tech Vikes have been around since 2007. Since then, we have participated in more than 40 events, won more than 20 awards, and gone to the FIRST World Championship 10 times.
However, competitions aren’t what drives the team. We focus on community outreach during our off-season by visiting our dear sponsors, participating in parades, showing off at school events, and hosting our annual summer Robo Camp. Our goal as a team is not only to teach students to become better people and leaders, but also to turn what we learn into what we preach.
As always, we thank our sponsors for supporting us whether we are shooting t-shirts at football games or designing the next best robot!
